Police Fatally Shoot Woman After Child Stabbing in Walmart Parking Lot
A tragic and fast-moving incident in Omaha has left a woman dead and a young child injured after a police-involved shooting at a Walmart parking lot on Tuesday morning.
According to the Omaha Police Department, officers responded to an emergency call around 9:15 a.m. on South 72nd Street. Authorities said a woman initially contacted 911 requesting help but stopped communicating during the call. Shortly after, another caller reported a suspect armed with a large kitchen knife and a child in her presence.
When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered 31-year-old Noemi Guzman with a 3-year-old boy seated in a shopping cart. Police issued repeated commands for Guzman to drop the weapon, but she allegedly refused and made verbal threats.
Officials say the situation escalated when Guzman used the knife to slash the child. In response, officers discharged their weapons, fatally shooting her at the scene.
The child was quickly removed from the cart by a guardian and another bystander and transported to a nearby children’s hospital. Authorities confirmed that the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Investigators later learned that Guzman had approached the child and guardian inside the store, threatening them before forcing them outside into the parking lot. Police arrived moments after they exited the building.
Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol in such cases. An active investigation is underway to review the full circumstances of the incident.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer stated that the officers acted decisively to protect the child, emphasizing their swift response in a life-threatening situation.
