The community of Bowie, Maryland is mourning the tragic and untimely loss of Mijah Smith, 24, who died following a devastating late-night crash on Interstate 495 in Prince George’s County.
According to Maryland State Police, the fatal accident occurred around 10:13 p.m. on April 13, 2026, along the inner loop near Maryland Route 704. Authorities reported that Mijah Smith was driving a BMW SUV when, for reasons still under investigation, her vehicle left the roadway, struck a barrier, and became disabled.
Moments later, a second vehicle—an Acura passenger car—approached the scene and attempted to avoid the disabled SUV. Despite efforts to prevent a collision, the Acura struck the barrier and then crashed into Smith’s vehicle, resulting in the fatal incident.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, but sadly, Mijah Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Acura was not injured.
The crash led to temporary lane closures lasting approximately two hours as investigators worked to document the scene and reconstruct the events leading up to the collision. The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
